The Dinky Tap class started in February 2007. It is a fun introduction to tap and rhythm using action songs, pop songs and musical instruments. The uniform is basically the same as for Dinky Dance, although Tap shoes are obviously required, so some children may wish to attend both class styles

The Rosette and Preparatory levels give a good introduction to this technique working on the main concepts, such as rhythm and musicality. The children begin to limber the feet and ankles in preparation for more demanding steps which will be tackled later on. Plenty of imagery is used to inspire the children such as splashing in puddles, digging holds and grandfather clocks! Music used in class is mainly instrumental although lyrics are sometimes used. Recent class music includes Thomas the Tank Engine, The Magic Roundabout and Heigh-Ho. ‘Children love making a noise with their tap shoes in these lessons!

As students progress more advanced steps are learned such as
single, double and triple timesteps, ‘beat wings’, ‘riffs’ and ‘pull backs’,
all using the American tap style. Dancing in a group, when the timing is
perfect produces a sensational sound and gives a real sense of achievement.
Recent class music includes Singin’ in the Rain and pieces from Chicago and 42nd
Street.

Tap classes at Prima started in 2005 and we currently have
children from basic Rosette standard up to Grade 4. As students progress
further IDTA vocational exams will be available at Intermediate, Advanced 1 and
Advanced 2 levels.
Tap is considered to be one of the three core dance techniques,
along with Ballet and Jazz and therefore assists in vocational college
entry for those who wish to pursue dance or Musical Theatre as a career.
