Children can learn Scottish National Dance from the age of 6. This technique is a top attraction at the Highland Games although it is now practised across the globe, being very popular in the USA and Australia! It is as much for boys as it is for girls, in fact for the last 20 years or so a man has won the Scottish World Championship almost every year!
Various dances are learned within these classes. For example, 'Flora McDonald's Fancy' which is said to be the last dance Flora McDonald danced for Bonnie Prince Charlie before he fled overseas. 'The Sailor's Hornpipe' portrays actions moved in the daily work routines of a sailor's life such as pulling ropes, climbing the rigging and looking out to sea! The Scottish lilt is a graceful dance with balletic movements and there are many others to learn too.
The children
in these classes wear our uniform leotards and skirts along with a tartan sash
for that Scottish flavour and of course a pair of highland dance shoes (with
the criss-cross laces!). There is of course an alternative uniform for boys.
