Prima School of Performing Arts

Washington & Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, UK. Classes for children aged 1+ and adults

Top-Up

The top-up scheme at Prima exists to offer additional classes to external students aged 11+ who attend classes in the same technique at other dance schools. It is accepted that at the higher graded and vocational levels many schools have only a few students and may not be able to offer enough classes to allow their students to continue to make good progress.

This programme ensures that students remain at their regular school whilst enhancing their learning at Prima. The student will still formally be a student of their original school. Any students wishing to take part in the scheme are welcome to attend a free trial week without any obligation. However, if they decide they would like to continue attending classes they must obtain the written permission of their regular teacher (via the permission form included in the welcome pack supplied during the trial week).

The student’s regular teacher can decide whether the student may be included with events at Prima such as performances, exams and so on and may also specify any other conditions.

The programme is not intended to take students away from their regular schools and therefore there is a clause in place which ensures that the student’s regular teacher remains in control of the student’s attendance at Prima for as long as the student attends both classes. If the student chooses to leave their regular school Prima will remove the student from all classes at Prima for a period of at least 6 months unless their former teacher requests otherwise. After this period of time Prima will accept the student (unless they have a different contract with their former school which requires a longer break when changing schools).

Prima uses the RAD syllabus for Ballet, IDTA for Tap, Modern Jazz and Musical Theatre and UKA for Cheer and Scottish National, free work is also practised in some classes. Students from schools that use different examining societies may find there are differences in certain training methods and movements themselves. These students are expected to follow our training whilst at Prima and revert to their usual training whilst at their regular school. It is possible that not all students will have the maturity to do this and the student’s regular teacher may remove the student from classes at Prima if it is causing problems with their regular training.

A uniform list is provided to the student within their welcome pack. For top-up students this is entirely optional. They may wear other dancewear as long as it is suitable for the technique being studied and for the floors of the studio. Top-up students are not required to pay an enrolment fee but must fill in an enrolment form so that we have all the necessary details about the student.

It is hoped that both the student and the student’s regular teacher will see this programme in a positive light and that all concerned will benefit from it, especially the student.
